After the lights and decorations of the holidays have found their place in the attic again, it suddenly feels so bare and empty downstairs. Especially now that the evenings are still long, we can all use some extra atmosphere and warmth.
In my search for a new set of candlesticks, I came across a timeless alternative to candles and candlesticks: the oil lamp. I am now a complete fan of these oil lamps. They are a super fun and beautiful addition to other light sources in the house and also sustainable and timeless.
Before I list the benefits, first a bit of history 😉
A historical journey
Oil lamps have a rich history and have been a reliable source of light for centuries. They were first used in ancient Egypt, where they were made of earthenware and filled with vegetable oils. Over the centuries, these simple lamps transformed into true works of art, made from various materials such as bronze, copper and glass. They were used in homes and temples, but also on ships to provide light during the night.
Although modern lighting technologies have conquered the world, oil lamps still retain their charm and are often used as decorative accents in the home. They give a very nice warm light that creates an intimate atmosphere.
Besides their aesthetic value, they also offer some advantages over candles.
1. Longer burning time
A striking - and for me perhaps the biggest - advantage of oil lamps is their longer burning time compared to candles. While candles burn out after a few hours, these oil lamps can burn for up to 50 hours. Ideal for long evenings full of cozy dinners and special occasions, where you can enjoy a continuous warm glow and atmosphere without having to constantly replace.
2. Adjustable flame
Oil lamps offer a unique advantage in terms of brightness control. By simply adjusting the wick, you can control the intensity of the light. This makes oil lamps more versatile than candles, which do not have adjustable flames.
3. Sustainability
Oil lamps are not only functional and aesthetic, but also sustainable. The fiberglass wick of these oil lamps will last a lifetime, provided you use the right lamp oil.
Unlike candles, oil lamps burn cleaner; they do not drip, they do not smoke, they produce less soot and they retain their elegance and shape.

4. Versatile design
Whether you prefer a minimalist, modern style or prefer a more classic, nostalgic design, these glass oil lamps add a timeless decorative element to your interior, even when they are not lit.
While I certainly won't deny that candles have their own unique charm, the versatility and durability of oil lamps has completely won me over. Here to stay.
